Earth Day 2024

Earth Day is April 22nd.  Every day should be Earth Day. Not just one day out of the year. Everyone can make a difference even if it is small. Earth Day is just a reminder day to keep Earth clean every day. Here are some things you can do to keep Earth clean.

What is Earth Day?

  • Earth Day Celebrated on April 22nd every year
  • In 1970 people all over the US spoke up about the Earth to show they cared about the Earth.

How to keep Earth clean right in your backyard:

  • Recycle
  • Pick up trash
  • Plant a tree
  • Turn off the lights
  • Use less water

Recycling

The 3 Rs of Recycling:

  • Reduce
  • Reuse
  • Recycle

When recycling look for this symbol on Plastics to know if you can recycle it.

Here is what you can recycle:

  • Paper (Colored and White)
  • Cardboard
  • Cereal/Food boxes
  • Pop Cans
  • Tin cans
  • Foil
  • Glass bottles
  • Newspapers

Turn off lights

Anyone can do this. Turn off the lights as you leave the room. Keeping a light or two on in your house when you are gone at night is okay so you don’t come home to a dark house.

Use less water

It is so easy to not think about how much water we use every day. The simplest way to use less water is to turn off the water when brushing your teeth and while washing dishes. Another way is to take shorter showers.

Recycle Crafts

Pencil can holder

  • Tin can (Any size)
  • Scrapbook or colored paper
  • Hot glue Gun
  • Stickers (Optional)
  • Washi tape (Optional)
  • Pens or Markers (Optional)
  • Ribbon (Optional)

Pick any size tin can and wash and dry it.

Pick out what kind of paper you want to use and cut the paper to fit around the can.

Use the hot glue gun to glue the paper around the tin can.

If the tin can has a sharp edge around the top put a bit of hot glue around the top to cover the sharp edge.

Now it is up to you how you decorate your pencil can.

Milk Bottle bird feeders

  • clean gallon milk jug with the cap on
  • a black permanent marker
  • a craft knife
  • a pair of sharp scissors
  • a wooden dowel
  • some strong string or wire
  • birdseed

Drow 2 circles on the flat sides of the milk jug. Use something round to help you draw a perfect circle.

Carefully cut out holes with the craft knife, using your circles as a guide. Have your parent help you with this part.

Cut small slits near the bottom of the jug, under each circle you cut out to push the dowel through so the birds will have something to perch on while they eat.

Add some small holes in the bottom of the milk jug for drainage. Make sure your birdseed does not go through the holes.

You will want to remove the cap so you can wrap the string or wire around the bottom of the opening.

Make sure you twist the wire or tie off the string.

Put the cap back on to keep the wire or string tight on the jug.

Fill with seed up to just below the bottom of the two large holes.

Hang from a tree branch and watch the birds swoop in for a tasty treat!
