The Best Activity for Rainy Days Is Making Splish Splash Rain Boots

With this easy and fun rain boot art project, you can turn those gloomy rainy days into colorful construction experiences!

Items You’ll Need

  • White cardstock or thick paper
  • Markers or paints
  • For the marbling effect, use blue paint.
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Water in a cup
  • Extra embellishments, such as glitter or stickers, are not required.

Let’s be imaginative!

Create your marbled background in step one.

First up will be the gorgeous swirly blue background that makes these rain boots look like they’re splashing over puddles!

  1. Using a wet brush or spray bottle, lightly moisten a piece of white paper.
  2. Apply a drop of blue paint on the paper (liquid watercolors are excellent for this!)
  3. Tilt the paper gently to produce those lovely swirls that resemble marble.
  4. While you work on your boots, set them aside to dry.

Step 2: Create a Rain Boot Design

While your background dries, it’s time to design your colorful rain boots!

  1. On white cardstock, draw a basic rain boot shape. Parents can assist younger children with this stage.
  2. If you want to make a pair, make a second boot.
  3. The exciting part is about to begin: decorating! Select your look:
    • Stripes of rainbow: Paint horizontal stripes in rainbow hues like in our illustration
    • Color Solid: Use your preferred color and keep it basic.
    • Add flowers, raindrops, or other natural elements to create a nature theme.
    • Abstract: Use splashes, swirls, or dots to create your original design.

Step 3: Compile Everything

Let’s put our rainy day artwork together once everything has dried!

  1. Cut out your boot forms carefully along the outline
  2. To make your boots stand out, trace around the edges with a black marker.
  3. Place your footwear on the background of marbled blue.
  4. Use glue to hold them in place.
  5. Optional: Add your child’s name to their artwork!

Call It Your Own!

The opportunities for personalizing this craft are never-ending:

  • Changes by Season: Consider pastel colors for spring boots or fall tones for autumn boots.
  • Include Dimension: As boot decorations, apply buttons, sequins, or spare fabric.
  • As part of a family project, have each member create a boot that represents their unique personality.
  • The starting point of a story: Craft a rainy day quest story centered on the finished artwork.
